ID Medical: Helping to staff NHS Nightingale Hospitals

Here at ID Medical, we’ve been doing everything possible to help the NHS in its’ time of need; and helping staff the new Nightingale Hospitals is one of them.

 

We’d like to start this blog post off with a big thank you to all NHS staff for their courage, efforts and dedication by stepping up to fight on the frontline against Covid 19.

You are our heroes.

The NHS belongs to the UK people. It’s a system that helps improve our nation’s health, wellbeing and to continuously support us throughout our entire lives – both physically and mentally.

The NHS works on science, but also brings the highest levels of human knowledge and skill to save lives and improve health. Most of all however, and especially during this pandemic, the NHS has touched our nation by showing care and compassion even in the face of extraordinary adversity.

To provide critical care for patients suffering with Covid 19, a new model of care was developed by the UK Government; one that needed huge additional numbers of medical professionals. Specific Covid 19 infirmaries, named NHS Nightingale Hospitals after the inspirational nurse, Florence Nightingale, were setup in conference centres and stadiums across the country – with the first opening at London’s ExCel conference centre on the 3rd April.

At this present moment in time, the Nightingale Hospitals are situated in London, Birmingham and the North West. There are also plans to open additional hospitals in Yorkshire, Glasgow, Belfast, Bristol and Exeter.

Whilst the Nightingale Hospitals have the facilities and infrastructure to care for huge numbers of patients, they will experience two specific problems: problems that ID Medical, as one of the UK’s largest providers of permanent and locum staff to the UK’s National Health Service, are providing effective solutions for and in doing so, helping to protect the UK nation against the pandemic.

1. A Strong Workforce

Like many businesses, the pandemic has presented us with a number of new and unexpected challenges; luckily, we’ve risen against them to achieve our primary goal of helping to provide the NHS with the essential staff it needs to fight the virus.

Of course, the NHS already possesses a highly committed, knowledgeable and skilful workforce. During Covid 19, we’ve seen these healthcare professionals from all over the country join as one to provide an extraordinary range of care to its patients.

However, the NHS is experiencing growing pressure to meet the needs of the service due to an increase in Covid 19 patients with complex care needs. Prior to the disease’s outbreak, there were already over 100,000 vacancies across the entire NHS. During the pandemic, we’ve seen that number rise dramatically due to staff having to self-isolate or recover from the virus.

We’ve committed to work closely with the NHS and assist in providing staff from FY1 level all the way up to Consultants to the new NHS Nightingale Hospitals across the country. These hospitals require specialist 21st century care, which is why we have carefully co-ordinated a multifaceted strategy.

Our strategy focuses on providing an effective supply route for all healthcare professionals, allowing our workers to choose their hospital location, part-time hours or specific weekend work – all whilst working within a safe environment.

ID Medical has a two-pronged approach to the successful supply of staff in Nightingale Hospitals and other NHS trusts that need our help:

A) Utilising our Network

Since the NHS was established in 1948, it has been well-served by staff from all over the world. Last year for example, we saw more international doctors register with the GMC than UK-qualifying doctors. We believe this should be celebrated and we thank all medical professionals who’ve relocated to the UK to serve the British public’s healthcare needs.

B) Provide a flexible and adaptable workforce

Our ID Medical workforce represents a range of education and training from healthcare systems around the entire world; nevertheless, all our people are GMC Registered with the appropriate knowledge and skills to work within the UK.

Our medical professionals have distinct roles which will provide Nightingale hospitals with the scope to blend clinical responsibilities between professions to meet the needs of the service. This flexibility is also rewarding for staff as it will keep variety in their day, but also provides the NHS with more choice on how they organise their services.

2. Ensuring patient and staff safety

First and foremost, the purpose of Nightingale Hospitals is to address the high demand for care of Covid 19 patients with moderate or severe respiratory distress, with a focus on the high availability of ventilator equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

By joining an NHS Nightingale Hospital, you can expect the following infection prevention and control procedures:

  • A core team and key internal and external contact points
  • Communication and data protection
  • Hand hygiene, personal protective equipment and waste management
  • Appropriate infrastructure, clear policies, appropriate triage, placement of patients
  • Adequate staff-to-patient ratios and training of staff
  • Patient placement
  • Environmental cleaning
  • Environmental engineering: space to allow social distance of at least one metre and well-ventilated isolation rooms.

NHS Nightingale in the North West was just recently awarded an excellent CQC rating as they can confirm that all staff will receive the adequate PPE equipment needed to protect themselves from the virus.

This rating is definitely something to be celebrated.
